Compensation for serving members
Robert believed he had to wait until discharge to lodge a DVA claim—but that’s simply not true. If you have also been told this, it’s bad advice. DVA actively encourages serving ADF members to lodge claims as soon as possible, when medical evidence is easier to access and when compensation is paid at higher rates due to payouts being age adjusted.
DVA recognises that serving members may feel apprehensive about seeking support through internal ADF channels when it comes to their claims. To support this, DVA can facilitate any necessary investigations through external providers, ensuring you remain in control of your story throughout the process.
The DVA looks at the following when deciding your compensation
- Permanency: DVA will only pay compensation for a condition if the condition is unlikely to resolve.
- Stability: DVA may pay reduced rates of compensation for conditions which are fluctuating in impairment.
- Impairment: In general, the more a condition impairs you, the more compensation you may receive from DVA.
- Medical Assessments: DVA will rely on available medical evidence, getting connected with a provider who understands you is important.
How DVA decides your compensation amount
DVA considers a range of factors when assessing eligibility for compensation, including the severity of your condition, your age, gender, and type of service. If liability is accepted, a permanent impairment assessment can be conducted to assess your eligibility for lump sum compensation. Compensation can be paid for both physical and mental health conditions that have arisen as a result of service.
Any ADF member is eligible to lodge a claim with DVA after just one day of service.
No obligation. No risk. Talk to a DVA claims expert.

FAQs
We’ve gathered our most commonly asked questions here, so you can feel informed, at ease, and ready to take the next step toward the support and benefits you deserve.
Can I lodge a claim if I am still in recruit training?
Yes, to lodge a DVA claim you need to have completed one day of ADF service. Many ADF veterans sustain injuries during basic training which result in them being discharged. The duration of your service will not influence the outcome of any claim you may make for compensation to DVA.
Do I need to pay for any medical investigations?
No, all necessary medical investigation for the purpose of establishing initial liability and impairment will be covered by a TRN. Our team will request a TRN from DVA on your behalf to ensure you pay nothing out of pocket.
Do you need my medical records?
No, The most important step is to get started, partially due to the fact the claims process can take considerable time. The DVA will request a copy of your service medical records. If there is no available evidence within your service medical record, DVA will request further testing via a diagnostic assessment.
What benefits could my family be eligible for?
Families of veterans may be eligible for support through DVA. These can include fortnightly tax-free payments under the Maintenance Related Compensation for Education and Training Scheme (MRCAETS) to help dependent children in full-time study. If the veteran is assessed as severely impaired due to service-related conditions, dependents may also receive a tax-free lump sum of up to $108,000 under the Severely Impaired Payment (SIP). Eligibility is determined by DVA based on individual circumstances.
How can I optimise the claims process for the best outcome?
While DVA are the final decision makers and decisions are made strictly on the basis of available evidence and legislation. There are proactive measures which can be taken which may increase the likelihood of your claim being approved. It’s a good idea to speak with an Advocate before having your DVA claims submitted.
